About 70 children from many schools, and some parents, enjoyed Rhythmix, a Percussion Workshop Day at Beechwood Park School, Markyate.

Led by Kevin Hathway, Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion at The Purcell School, and one of the UKs most respected percussionists and educators, the participants, some as young as five years old, enjoyed a terrific insight into todays exciting world of percussion, working with top international players, experiencing and performing the many different genres including Stomp, drum kit, Orchestral, tuned percussion and timpani.

The packed audience at the final concert were treated to a lively rendition of Mirrors, a percussion overture, played by all staff and course members, putting into practice what they had seen and worked on in the course of the day in the different sessions.

They also heard some inspiring and spellbinding performances by gifted young musicians from The Purcell School, Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music Junior Department. Works included Libertango by Astor Piazzolla played on the Marimba and a Clarinet and Marimba duo played an arrangement of Flight of the Bumblebee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

One young participant at the event, Thomas Mulholland, 9, said I loved learning more about percussion and the skills needed to play well and I definitely want to take up percussion after today. It was great fun.
