A St Albans ‘spirits boutique’ has teamed up with a prestigious rum producer to give Herts a taste of the Caribbean
Did you know there’s a special rum that’s exclusively available in Hertfordshire?
Tomoka Spirits Boutique, which has stores in St Albans and Harpenden, has collaborated on a unique bottling with the prestigious Plantations Rum producer in the Caribbean.
Owners Roberto Fiorillo, Jass Patel and Tim Watson – who met while working at the award-winning Mokoko Cocktail Bar in St Albans – were invited to London by Plantation to sample 20 different casks of its rums, with a view to choosing their own exclusive one to sell.
Roberto explains, ‘We had the arduous task of critically assessing 20 rums, including some incredible examples like a 25-year-old from Trinidad aged in an ex-Cognac cask and finished in a Sauternes cask.
‘We eventually decided on a single cask which was previously used to mature Banyuls, filled with a blend of three different rums, distilled and matured in St Lucia, Guyana and Jamaica.’
Each island contributes something different to the rum’s flavour. The Guyana rum brings big and bold spice notes, St Lucia’s introduces rich flavours of roasted molasses and the Jamaican rum has notes of raisins, ripe oranges and vanilla. Only 450 bottles of Multi-Island were produced and they are on sale at Tomoka for £55.95.
It isn’t the boutique’s only venture of this kind. Last year the trio also collaborated with Cornish gin producer Tarquin’s to create a blood orange and lavender gin made using lavender from Cadwell Farm in Ickleford near Hitchin.
There are more unique collaborations in the pipeline for this year and also regular tutored tastings of artisan spirits held in store. For details, visit tomokaspiritsboutique.co.uk
