Parisian taste in Welwyn

A taste of France has arrived in Welwyn GC with the opening of a Côte Brasserie.

The stylish restaurant chain is inspired by the brasseries of Paris, ‘championing relaxed all-day dining and serving authentic French classics with a modern twist’, Menu favourites include steak frites (£10.95), tuna Niçoise (£12.95) and corn-fed poulet Breton (£10,95) and for desert, crème caramel (£5,50) and crème brûlée (£5.75). Wine is from a variety of French producers. A bottle of Chemin de Marquiere merlot is £18.95.

Facing the tree-lined green on Howardsgate, the new branch has a 1930s feel, with patterned tile floor, wood, brown leather and black iron. Wall to ceiling glass doors open out to a pavement seating area under a very French striped awning.

It’s the third Côte Brasserie in the county, joining those in St Albans and Bishop’s Stortford.

Foxy events at Willian

Celebrations to welcome the 2016 Beaujolais Nouveau kick off the winter season at the Fox at Willian this month.

The event, on Thursday November 17, is the first in a busy calendar at the village gastropub near Letchworth and features a three-course meal and a glass of the new wine for £35 a person.

A charity quiz on Sunday November 27 is also part of the programme. It is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, Hertfordshire, and costs £5 to enter.

For those who prefer not to have to head home after an evening at the Fox, it is opening eight guestrooms next door later this month.

Christmas at Brocket Hall

Brocket Hall estate has announced its Christmas celebration packages across its three elegant venues.

Party packages at the golf and country club start at £49.50 per person, with a Christmas Day celebration costing from £99 and New Year’s Eve in the Oak Room from £125.

Guests can also celebrate in Brocket Hall itself, which provides roaring open fires and offers overnight accommodation in luxury guestrooms, with a Christmas Party Package from £99 per person.

Auberge du Lac restaurant is also joining in the spirit with December menus from £39.50, five-course Christmas Day lunch at £160 and three-course Boxing Day lunch at £85.

An AdHoc party

Another Herts business where festive-season planning has started early is the AdHoc Bar and Kitchen in Hitchin, which has a Christmas dinner menu throughout this month and next at £21.95 from Sunday-Thursday and £26.95 on Friday-Saturday.

Starters include caprese soup or smoked-trout tartare while mains, along with turkey, feature fennel and parsnip rosti and sea bream parcels. Desserts include traditional Christmas pudding as well as black cherry frangipani. There are party nights with DJ Mark Gomez on December 2, 9, 16 and 23.

Spotted Dog’s gin fancy

Drinkers at the Spotted Dog in Flamstead now have an alternative tipple to its usual range of drinks after the pub launched a wide-ranging gin menu. The likes of King Soho, Death’s Door, Inverroche, Silent Pool, Brecon, Gin Mare and Cao Runn now join more-familiar bottles at the bar, all dedicated to tempting a new generation.

The menu was launched with Ben Marston, of Puddingstone Distillery, Tring, describing his mission to put his Campfire Gin brand on the market, which he achieved earlier this year through crowdfunding.
