Welcome to The Black Horse, Brent Pelham.
Who would run a village pub? Well, truth be told, we would. It’s what we do. Bringing the Black Horse back to life with great food, exceptional service and quaffable beverages is what this beautiful county and community deserve.
The pub has undergone a complete refurbishment to restore and enhance its rustic country style. We’ve also transformed the garden into a family-friendly outside drinking and dining space; you’ll find a children’s play area, Horse Box bar and BBQ serving slow cooked local meats.
You may have to travel slightly off the beaten track with plenty of stunning views on the way here. But, once you arrive, whether a first-time guest, regular or local, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting for you.
There may be a dog or two to step over on your journey to the bar, but they’re very friendly and that’s what a country pub should be and it’s how we like it. You will even find doggy biscuits at the bar.
Our Manager, Hugh Cater, grew up in the village and has returned from running some of the country’s most renowned establishments back to Brent Pelham to be at the helm of all things Black Horse.
We’ve got a simple philosophy here at The Horse: great food and exceptional service from a happy team in stunning surroundings. It’s a formula that we know works. And we love it!
You may have guessed by now, but we’re very passionate about supporting local producers and suppliers. We carefully source and prepare the freshest seasonal ingredients for our chefs to create modern dishes inspired by our rustic surroundings.
Our most current menus are available on the website, but if you have a special occasion or specific event, please speak to us, as we can create a tailor-made menu.
As well as our main menus, we also have a selection of daily specials available. Because we’re committed to sourcing the highest-quality local ingredients, our specials might not stay around for long as we rely on the availability of local produce.
The local area of Brent Pelham and surrounding villages are steeped in history and offer some truly amazing walks and cycle tracks.
It’s situated approximately five miles east of Buntingford and is one of three Pelhams; Stocking Pelham and Furneux Pelham. One of the most impressive sights as you enter Brent Pelham is St. Mary’s Church. The first written mention of the church goes back to the reign of King Stephen (1135 – 1154). The church has undergone restoration works over the years but still maintains the stocks and scold’s seat just outside the gates.
The earliest Landlord on record to have run The Black Horse is Thomas Tinworth back in 1866, but this grade 2 listed property consists of three buildings with the earliest dating back to the 17th century. Whether you are staying in nearby Bishops Stortford or are looking for a day trip to The Henry Moore Foundation, pop across to the village for a taste of true British countryside living. Or even better, come in to the pub and say hello.
