Glass of Herts: Hertfordshire gets in on the ‘freakshake’ trend

The freakshake trend took London by storm last year, and it’s easy to see why. For the uninitiated, freakshakes (originally from Australia) are an indulgent flavoured milkshake topped with cream, sauce and a big slice of cake – a messy mash-up between drink and dessert.

Hertfordshire was quick to get in on the action – Fabio’s Gelato in Hitchin sold freakshakes as early as April last year – but a new restaurant in Bishop’s Stortford has taken the phenomenon even further.

Burger Revolution has been concocting its own freakshakes (priced from £7.50) since it opened in September and they’ve recently introduced a range of limited edition ‘Super Freaks’, topped with classic sweets and candy floss and a lollipop. Flavours include Love Freak with gummy hearts and pink vanilla candy floss, and Funfair Freak with jelly beans and blue raspberry candy floss.

Restaurant owner Simon Cottam, a long-term Stortford resident, says freakshakes have been incredibly popular: ‘Most customers are slightly horrified and awestruck in equal measure. They even take selfies with them.’

Why are they so popular? ‘We all know is they are highly calorific and I think it is two fingers to the healthy living, eat clean, body-beautiful culture we all have to endure.’

As well as Super Freaks, Burger Revolution’s regular freakshake range includes the Chocolate Freak topped with a chocolate brownie, and Berry Freak topped with vanilla cheesecake and strawberries.

So what next for the outlet’s shake offerings? ‘We are currently perfecting the Trump Freakshake,’ Simon says. ‘Banana candy floss hair is featuring strongly.’
