The Norfolk Broads makes a wonderful winter day out

Whether it’s a cold country walk, a tranquil boat ride, or an afternoon spent next to the fire after a family day out, there is so much to do over the festive period on the Norfolk Broads.

The Broads is a network of man-made lakes and rivers in Norfolk and North Suffolk that are accessible with boats. They are very popular attractions for the counties’ residents as well as people travelling from further afield and even from abroad. They run through many picturesque villages and delightful countryside, and provide a beautiful day out all year round. Usually a hit in the summer with boat hires and for family days out, The Broads are also wonderful locations for trips out in the colder winter months and are a haven for wildlife throughout the year. Here’s our quick guide for what to do on The Broads this winter.

While this is mainly constricted to spring and summer periods, there are still companies that offer day boat hires during winter. Wrap up warm, pack a flask, and bring your friends and family for a day on the calm and quiet winter Broads.

There are many picturesque walks available all across The Norfolk Broads with plenty of wildlife and beautiful scenery in winter. Visit Buckenham Marshes and see the winter flock of bean geese, white-fronted geese, and wigeons, or walk around Whitlingham Lake with beautiful views 360 degrees around you. The Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden at South Walsham is offering a Boxing Day and a New Year’s Day guided walk.

There are lots of days out to be had along The Broads. You could wander around one of the towns connected to the rivers or head to an attraction like Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens.

There are plenty of cosy pubs on The Broads to warm up in after a cold winter walk by the water. Try the warm welcome at Acle Bridge Inn or the White Horse Inn in Neatishead that brews its own beer on site.

If you’re after something lighter, there are lots of cafés too. Try the tea room in The Galley in Horning.

Finally, if you’re hoping for more than a day out, check out some listings for a quaint and cosy cottage for a night.
