Sue Rosewell, senior designer at Scarlett Rose, Bishop’s Stortford, gives a guide to this summer’s fresh graduated look

This season’s interior trends are very fresh and summery with hints of pastel colours in ombre materials, which are contrastingly paired with rich velvets to give a romantic yet modern feel.

To achieve the full look, team it with painted floors and furniture to create a subtly-textured feel. To get the balance right, we suggest you follow our three golden rules:

Rule one: Ratio of colour.

Walls and floors 70 per cent in one colour.

Prints and fabrics 20 per cent in a second colour.

Accessories 10 per cent in an accent colour.

Rule two: Mixing patterns.

Mix large patterns with medium or medium patterns with small, but never large with small.

Rule three: Focal point.

Always add a focal point to a room, whether it is a large mirror, a bespoke piece of furniture or a feature wall.

We love the Desire collection (pictured) by British artist Jessica Zoob (Black Edition, Romo). Her imaginative paintings are unusual and translate beautifully into fabrics and wallpapers that are easily adaptable to update the look of any room.
