Queen’s grandparents’ home for sale

The royally-connected 232-acre Woolmers Park estate four miles from Hertford is up for sale at a cool £30m.

In 1927, the Grade II* Georgian mansion overlooking the river Lea was bought by the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, parents of the Queen Mother. As children, the Queen and Princess Margaret often stayed with their grandparents on the estate.

The house was built in 1739 and in its early years belonged to Samuel Whitbread the Younger, of the brewing family. In 1801, it was bought by the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater of canal-building fame and later it was acquired by Sir Gore Ouseley, who was pally with the Duke of York and the Duke of Wellington. In 1948, the estate became the property of Lascelles Arthur Lucas, who founded the Hertfordshire Polo Club a year later. Claire, his daughter, was regarded as England’s best female polo player and coached princes William and Harry.

Present incumbent Jeff Godbold bought the house in 1997 and took on an extensive project to bring the amenities up to date.

Woolmers Park is for sale through Savills and Knight Frank.

Chef tests Royston show home

Top chef Jethro Carr had no complaints after he tested the show home kitchen at Fairview Homes’ Affinity development in Royston. Neither did househunters as they watched the founder of the Kitchen Academy, a pop-up cooking school, whizz up a carrot and lentil salad, and a chocolate waffle and simnel cupcakes. Their verdict: Yum. And that went for the kitchen too.

Heronslea CEO runs for GOSH

Over the past three years, Jason Rishover, CEO of Hertfordshire-based developer Heronslea Group, has raised more than £40,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital as a thank you to the medical team who saved his niece Aimee’s life.

The 16-year-old was born with a rare heart condition. ‘Today she’s a bright healthy teenager, showing real promise as a sprinter on the athletic track,’ her uncle said.

Running runs in the family it seems – Rishover is a pretty good runner himself, having taken part in three consecutive London Marathons to raise funds for the hospital. This year, he beat his four hour target by crossing the finishing line at the end of the 26-mile course in three hours and 59 minutes.

Double joy at Letchworth new build

You know what they say about moving to a new home... Teachers Will and Hannah Tomsett (right) were already expecting their first baby when they chose a four-bed house on Barratt’s Madden Gardens development in Letchworth and their daughter Florence was born at the end of March

‘There’s a real sense of community here with lots of young families,’ says her 32-year-old mum. ‘We’ve lived in Letchworth since 2006. We love it. We bought our house off-plan, which gave us a chance to have an input in the design.’

Four-bedroom properties at Madden Gardens are currently priced around £500,000.
