School may be out for summer, but hundreds of Hertfordshire children will be heading back to class during the holidays to tackle a different series of challenges.

A wide range of projects have been lined up at more than 20 summer schools all over the county - from Countdown to the 2012 Olympics to Survival Geography. Facilitated by Hertfordshire County Council, and run by the schools, they are based at secondary schools and aimed at stretching gifted and talented children.

A jobs carnival and Whiz Kidz business and enterprise academy, both taking place at Francis Bacon School, St Albans, are among this years projects.

The pupils taking part are moving on to secondary school in September, and the County Council's Gifted and Talented Adviser Jeremy Reynolds said summer schools help ease that transition.

Young people love the challenge of tackling subjects in original and creative ways. It increases their confidence, lets their individual talents shine through and is also great fun.

Richard Thake, Executive Member for Education and Skills, said, These creative projects at summer school give higher attaining pupils the chance to look at subjects in greater depth over and above what they can do in the curriculum. They really enjoy going back to school for these exciting and motivating projects.
