THERE have been some major developments for the annual Hertfordshire Village of the Year Competition after main sponsor, Calor Gas, decided to withdraw its support for 2010.
But now replacement sponsorship has been secured from the Hertfordshire Community Foundation and this years competition has now been launched.

North Hertfordshire District Council continues to sponsor the Hertfordshire Village of the Year North Award and the Chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, Cllr Bernard Lloyd, will be hosting the Awards Evening.

There have also been changes to population limits. A contender for the Small Village of the Year prize is now defined as one with up to 1,000 inhabitants while the maximum population for any village taking part has increased to 6,000.

CPRE Hertfordshire has run the competition since 2000. There are four categories: Environment, Business, People and Communications. You can enter as many or as few as you wish. Each carries a plaque and a cash prize. However, you need to enter all four to compete for the coveted Hertfordshire Village of the Year East, North or West Trophies.

Any enthusiastic individual or group can co-ordinate an entry provided it is countersigned by the parish council chair or clerk. Invitations to enter will arrive with parish councils and regular entrants by February 1 and the entry deadline is April 29, 2010.

There are cash prizes of 100 each for the category winners and the Small Village of the Year; 250 each for the Villages of the Year East, North and West. There is also the chance of winning the prestigious Hertfordshire Village of the Year title.

The Childrens Poster Competition run in conjunction with the main competition is open to all village primary schools. This years themes are The Best Place in My Village (for Reception to Year 2) and What I Want My Village to Look Like (for Years 3 to 6). The deadline for entries is April 22, 2010. The overall winning poster will be displayed in every village entering the competition.
