The owner of Hitchin’s p.s. i love you gives an insight into setting up and running her specialist boutique
How did you get started in business? I had always planned to go to university but when I realised many graduates were failing to find jobs I decided to change my career path. I noticed a lack of shops selling high quality plus size clothing. When I was offered help by a couple who had over 30 years’ experience in the plus size clothing industry, I jumped at the chance.
What’s your motivation? I’ve always been self-motivated and like a challenge, which has been encouraged by both my mother and grandmother. It is important to me to listen to customers and strive to deliver good customer service so they always want to return. Hearing positive feedback motivates me even more and encourages me to plan an expansion in the future.
What are the biggest challenges? One of the biggest challenges of running a business has to be organisation. I didn’t realise how much work goes on in the background, such as paying bills, stock input and communicating with agents, clothing suppliers and customer emails. I also find it challenging to run my business while controlling my chronic fatigue.
What are the most valuable business lessons you’ve learned? I’ve learnt that you need to be organised, patient and take on board advice that’s offered to you. Always check a contract thoroughly before signing and never judge a book by its cover.
