Melanie Devers, event manager at Packfords Hotel, talks about her rescue dog from Spain

After my last dog died, I was so upset I vowed never to get another one. I changed my mind pretty quickly when a photo of this funny looking little puppy popped up on my Facebook feed.

I follow AA Dog Rescue’s page and saw their post about three puppies that had been found on the side of the road in Spain. Patsy was so nervous and frail when they found her and much weaker than her sisters. All I wanted was to give her a cuddle, so I called the Rescue Centre immediately to say we would adopt her.

AADR in Maldon is run by Charley and Karen who I cannot recommend highly enough! They don’t have the funding or high tech facilities of rescue centres like Battersea, but they rely on donations and with the help of their amazing volunteers and vets they have saved and re-homed over 2,000 dogs. They organised all Patsy’s inoculations and a puppy passport before driving over to Spain to collect not just her, but the 33 other dogs she had been living with in Murcia.

We finally got to meet her when Charley brought her to our home in Wanstead. It was love at first sight!

She was so skinny and too scared to even go out for a walk but thanks to our vet Lyndon (at the Animal Ark) she is now fighting fit and such a little character loved by the whole family. She’s given my retired parents a new lease of life; they pick her up from my office every day to take her for a long walk and breakfast at Beligique on the Green, where the staff have her bowl of water ready.

I would urge anyone thinking of getting a pet to consider adopting a rescue dog. Re-homing a vulnerable and unwanted dog gives them a second chance at a happier life and I guarantee they will bring you so much happiness in return!
