Hertfordshire County Council has installed free electric vehicle charging points at County Hall in Hertford.

Hertfordshire County Council has installed free electric vehicle charging points at County Hall in Hertford.

The charging post has been installed in conjunction with Evalu8 Transport Innovations as part of the Source East network.

There are already a number of charging posts around the eastern region and the Source East network will be expanding to over 500 posts by March 2013. Each recharge post has points to charge two electric vehicles at a time. Electric car drivers who join the network will never be more than 25 miles away from a recharging point while driving in the eastern region.

Drivers of electric vehicles will need to pre-register online with Source East at in order to use the electricity. Once registered, drivers can recharge their vehicles securely and for free at County Hall and at any of the Source East points for two years.

Stuart Pile, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: Promoting sustainable transport and reducing carbon emissions are important to us and we hope there will be a lot of interest in this free service. Soon drivers in Hertfordshire will never be far away from a recharging point, making driving an electric car a practical, as well as environmentally-friendly, option.

Keith Bevis, Managing Director of Evalu8 Transport Innovations, said: We are working with local authorities and private companies as they address their future transport policies and consider introducing electric vehicles into their operations. The network of charging points across the region will benefit the drivers, the environment and the economy.

Organisations wanting to get involved in the scheme can access grants of up to seventy-five per cent off the cost of the post and installation by working with Evalu8.
