St Albans’ Danielle Sargeson on how her rescue horse Quid became a royal TV star

How did you discover Quid?

I was looking to buy a youngster to train for dressage and went to look at some horses at a dealer’s yard in Hemel Hempstead and there he was. He was very thin, you could see all his bones. He had sores all over his white markings, constant diarrhoea, part of his foot was missing and he had a dent in his head – I just couldn’t leave him there.

It took a while to get him back to health. Even now he can’t eat rich hay and it took two months to get him to eat a carrot. I think the day he arrived at my Sandridge yard, everyone thought I was mad but I wasn’t going to give up on him.

He’s an ex-racehorse, what’s his background?

He raced over in Ireland four times but wasn’t fast enough, so was sold. He turned up as part of a job lot in the dealer’s yard and I bought him. I call him Quid as he has cost me a lot, but his official name is Brazilian.

Racehorses are known to be highly strung, what’s his temperament?

Very occasionally he will have a mad moment and I watch him take off up the field and wonder how on earth he wasn’t fast enough to race. But despite what has happened to him, he has a big heart. Sadly he cannot be ridden by adults anymore due to his problems but he gladly lets the smaller children ride him up from the field bare back. Because he can’t be ridden, we try and keep him occupied in other ways. If you ask him to say please, he will lift his front leg up for you to shake. If you ask for a kiss, he will give one in return for a carrot.

He appeared in the recent acclaimed Netflix series The Crown, depicting the early reign of the Queen. How did he get the part?

A friend of mine does a lot of film work with horses, and for The Crown they wanted a chestnut racehorse that looked like the Queen’s racehorse, Aureole. When we looked closely at Quid he is very much the spitting image of Aureole. We have been on three filming shoots for the series.

How did Quid handle the attention?

Film shoots are very long days and you have to be ready for whenever they call you, which could be at any time during the day. Quid took to it like a professional. There can be a lot of hanging around while they do the lighting and sound and then several takes of each shoot, so he would end up doing the same things over and over again but never seemed fazed by it. Quid has a habit of hanging on to things, be it his lead rope or someone’s sleeve, so as long as he had that he would stand quite happily despite all the things going on around him.

Has he got a taste for the movies?

He has done some promotional work, and features in marketing material for an American veterinary company. We are waiting to hear if he will appear in the next series of The Crown.
