Work towards holding the first Hertford Carnival for over a decade is set to continue, after Hertford Town Councillors gave the go-ahead last night to further exploring the idea.

The proposal is to bring the carnival back to the town in 2012, which will be an important year in the UK with the London Olympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee. The carnival could be at the heart of Hertfords contribution to the celebrations.

As continues to be the case for carnivals across the country, the Hertford Carnival of the past was organised by a Carnival Committee, and the hunt is on for volunteers to enable a carnival to take place in the town in 2012.

Hertford Town Council would play its part by taking on responsibility for matters such as making arrangements to comply with health and safety regulations and road closures, which have become a major barrier to volunteers getting involved in such initiatives

Chairman of the Development and Leisure Committee, Cllr Jane Sartin, said, 'Long-term residents of Hertford will remember the Hertford Carnival fondly, and newer residents will no doubt have experienced one elsewhere.

'Wherever they take place, their success is down to a band of committed volunteers. We want to hear from everyone who feels they might be able to play a part in bringing the Hertford Carnival back to life in 2012. Individuals, community groups, schools and churches I challenge everyone to think about the skills and experience they have, and come forward to get involved in this exciting project.'

The Town Council will hold a meeting in the new year to discuss the proposals further with all interested people.Anyone who would like to attend, or who has further questions, is asked to contact the Town Clerk, Nina Villa, by email at town.clerk@hertford.gov.uk or on 01992 552885.
