Above: Hertfordshire Open Studios gives artists a voice

IN 1990, representatives from the county council, the University of Hertfordshire and some art graduates formed the Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum (HVAF) to give Hertfordshire artists a voice in the community. From the outset the forum was run by artists whose ideas, inspirations and talents have made the organisation what it is today.
With more than 300 artist members the forum has become a stronghold for artists in the county, ensuring opportunities, support and ongoing art-based events are not only accessible but well supported too. One of the forum’s first and most significant initiatives was the Hertfordshire Open Studios event, which takes place for the 17th year this month. With more than 200 HVAF participating members it is once again set to be a resounding success.
Wendy Dumbrell, Herts Open Studios co-ordinator, says, ‘Whatever people are looking for they’ll find it at this year’s event.’ The forum is made up of artists of all calibres from painters, sculptors, ceramists, photographers and textile artists ensuring a diversity of work right across the county. Many open their own homes and studios for visitors to call in and talk about their work while others prefer to exhibit at other venues, including art galleries and studios, community halls, museums, pubs and cafés. ‘And likewise, some members of the public prefer not to go to artists’ homes so having these alternative venues works for everyone,’ adds Wendy.
Open Studios has been a catalyst in bringing art to the masses. Not only does the Herts event attract around 8,000 visitors each year, many of whom are inspired to have a go themselves, but people are more incentivised to purchase a piece of art work, realising that much of it is not financially out of their reach. The artists gain from the experience – talking about their work can increase confidence and formulate new ideas.
Other community art projects have given members the chance to become involved, some of which are incorporated within the open studios programme. The projects are often supported by local businesses and other enterprises and held at community venues. Some of these projects involve local schools and colleges. These initiatives are designed to promote artists and their work and raise audience awareness for the visual arts.
Hertfordshire Open Studios runs from September 8 to 30.
