Exploring Woodland: East Anglia and North Thames
Many walkers or strollers will already know many of the best woods to walk in but this book offers the chance to learn about some less well known as well. As well as the essential details on size, location and parking, the book describes archaeological features, main types of trees, rare plants and the history of that part of woodland. As well as covering Hertfordshire – with such delights as Tring Park, Hoddesdon Park and Sherrardspark Wood – the book covers Buckingamshire, Essex, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and parts of north London. There should be no chance of running out of choices.

Waterside Walks: In The Chilterns/Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire
The titles of these books pretty much speak for themselves. Both are full of delightful countryside walks along some of the picturesque canals, rivers and lakes in each area. All are well explained and well illustrated with photographs of the scenes along the walks and route maps. Serious walkers will enjoy the likes of the six-mile Hambleden (Chilterns) and Tempsford (Herts/Beds) walks while for the more gentle ambler the two-and-a-half mile Burnham Beeches (Chilterns) and Shefford (Herts/Beds) walks could be just the ticket.

Tring 1951-2000
This Images of England book is a sequel to Tring 1900-1951 and picks up where that book left off. Lavishly illustrated with intriguing images and documents, it charts the many changes faced by the small market town as its population steadily increased. Photographs allow the reader a chance to glimpse now demolished buildings which made way for new homes but also to see how much of the town has remained the same. Each picture – ranging from sports club and school photographs to snaps of the bypass being built and a Royal visit – is guaranteed to spark a few memories.

Conducting Terror
This action-packed thriller by St Albans writer Julian Hopkins is based in both London and New York against a background of political intrigue. A murder at London’s Royal Opera House leads a music critic into the middle of a Scotland Yard and FBI investigation and into the murky world of terrorist activity. A highly topical novel – touching on international terrorism and the procurement of weapons of mass destruction – Conducting Terror is fast-paced, with the action taking place in the space of just two weeks. Despite the complicated subject matter the book, which is Harpenden-born Julian’s first novel, makes for an interesting and easy read.
