Whether you’re new to sketching and painting or you’re looking to hone a new skill, Val Cansick Studio tells us why joining an art class could be the perfect option

How to find a class at the right skill level

It can be daunting for beginners when looking at art classes to join. It's easy to get bogged down comparing your sketching and painting abilities to those around you and giving up before you've properly started. But it's important to make sure that you know where your skill levels are before enrolling on a drawing class or painting workshop.

At Val Cansick Studio, painters and artists of all abilities are catered for, from complete beginners, to those wanting to brush up on rusty skills, right up to professional artists. Classes are generally designed to cater for attendees of similar abilities and are intentionally kept small to ensure that everyone has sufficient one to one attention during their attendance.

Val explains: "My aim is to get people excited about painting and really feel good about themselves through showing them they can achieve more than they think. We have a wide age range of people who are attracted to learning new skills and this can be for all sorts of conscious and sub-conscious reasons, so we like to connect with that and help them to enjoy the teaching."

What types of classes you can take

Whether you want a one-day art refresher or a week of losing yourself in painting, with a bit of research, finding the right art class that meets your needs as closely as possible is important.

There is a variety of class options to suit you at Val Cansick Studio: opt for a half day all the way up to a full five day course. From watercolour painting classes on a Saturday to sketching workshops for established painters, there's something for every skill level.

Val explains: "As long as students are as good as they can be, that's the important thing because then they feel happy about themselves. These days we hear so much about people feeling not good enough but we don't use that terminology in my classes. It is really about making people feel enthused and excited enough to keep going."

What benefits do art classes have?

Studies have shown that being creative can improve mood and relieve stress, depression and anxiety. Whether it's writing, music, drawing or painting, having a creative outlet can be incredibly satisfying and fulfilling.

"It becomes very apparent during my courses that it's not just about the class, it's a huge help for mental and physical wellbeing because students get completely absorbed in it. Painting is very exciting for some people because it's a freedom, they can let go and they don't have to feel embarrassed because nobody is judging them. We cater for all here," says Val.
