When hunger strikes, nothing hits the spot like a big burger stacked with toppings. We pick some great burger restaurants to try in Hertfordshire

The Meating Room

22 Catherine Street, St Albans

Pared back décor welcomes visitors who are looking for a hearty burger; The Meating Rooms on Catherine Street in St Albans is an independent eatery offering a mouth watering selection of burgers that come dripping with cheese and topped with an array of condiments.

What to order: Indulge in a King Harry burger comprised of a double patty with cranberry jam relish, turkey bacon, gem lettuce, tomato, red onion and brie. Vegetarians are in luck as they can order one of three tempting veggie burgers.

Craft and Cleaver

62 Catherine Street, St Albans

Inspired by the smokehouses of Brooklyn, New York, Craft and Cleaver serves craft beer and authentically prepared wood fired BBQ food. This is a meat-lovers heaven!

What to order: Burgers are served in a soft brioche bun with 50/50 fries, house slaw and pickles. Variations include the Busted & Blue, an 8oz beef patty stuffed with blue cheese and topped with bacon, mushroom and onion marmalade, relish and rockstar mayo.

Relish Real Burgers

St Albans and Potters Bar

With two sites in Hertfordshire so far, Relish creates comforting menus with a dedicated brunch menu of French toast, pancakes and more (St Albans restaurant only) but the real star of the show is the burger menu.

What to order: The Mighty Mexican burger comes with guacamole, jalapenos, sour cream and spicy tomato relish; or try the Tasty Thai fish burger made with salmon and prawns, ginger, chilli, lime and fresh coriander. Sides include halloumi chips, cheesy onion fries or apple and beetroot slaw. For a sweet kick, order one of the milkshakes with flavours such as peanut M&Ms, mint choc chip or boozy pina colada.

The Woolpack

Mill Bridge, Hertford

The Woolpack is the self-proclaimed “burger specialist of Hertford”, serving big burgers in brioche buns. With plenty of extra toppings including grilled vegetables, beer braised onions, habanero salsa, halloumi, bacon and much more, you can curb those hunger pangs with your perfect burger at The Woolpack.

What to order: If you’re really hungry, order The Mighty Woolpacker: double stacked beef burgers with onion rings and beer braised onions, bacon, emmental and stilton. Desserts come in the form of waffle, cookie or brownie sundaes and ice cream milkshakes (with a shot of something for the adults!)

Burger Revolution

4 The Corn Exchange, Market Square, Bishop’s Stortford

Only locally sourced ingredients go into the burgers at Burger Revolution in Bishop Stortford with 100% British beef and pork and buns made by an Essex bakery. Build your own burger and make sure to add sides: we love the sound of truffle and parmesan skin-on fries.

What to order: Try a rib eye steak burger with chilli jam, tomato and pickles; a spiced lamb kofta burger with minted yoghurt, green leaves, jalapenos and pickles. What better to complement your burger than a milkshake in flavours such as banana, salted caramel and peanut butter?

Lambert’s Original Hamburgers

Great Ashby Way, Unit 5B, Great Ashby Shops, Stevenage

With weekly changing special burgers that have included creations such as the Fat Boy with two brisket and bacon patties, cheddar cheese and topped homemade apple and onion chutney in a soft brioche bun, Lambert’s Original Hamburgers in Stevenage makes burgers as fun as they should be!

What to order: Inventively named burgers include The Italian Job: a 4oz beef patty topped with mozzarella, pepperoni, tomato passata and basil. We would pair this with some Angry Fries with blue cheese and hot sauce.

Taste Bar & Grill

70 High Street, Stevenage

Think big burgers and refreshing cocktails at Taste Bar & Grill on the high street in Stevenage. Stacks of onion rings on top of tantalising patties with soft buns and sides of fries make these burgers something special.

What to order: The Smokey Mountain Burger is a 6oz beef patty with caramelised onions and smokey mayo. Served up with a side of chilli cheese fries sounds perfect to us!

Arnold’s American Diner

38D Stanstead Road, Hoddesdon

For an authentic American diner experience, head to Arnold’s Diner on Stanstead Road in Hoddsedon. Pick a song on the jukebox and settle down in the vintage style diner for big burgers and American food: you will feel like you’ve stepped back to 1950s USA.

What to order: Sides of deep-fried mozzarella fingers with sweet cranberry dip; nachos with melted cheese, guacamole, sour cream and tomato salsa; and loaded potato poppers with Cajun spice, melted swiss cheese and bacon accompany burgers such as the New York Jack with two 6oz burgers with double Swiss cheese and smoked bacon.

The Snug

Various locations

With Hertfordshire locations in Hitchin, St Albans, Hertford and Ware, there is sure to be a Snug bar near you! Burgers at the Snug are served in a brioche bun with skinny fries and house coleslaw on the side.

What to order: Creative toppings include Bloody Mary salsa, red chillies, jalapenos, and chilli sauce for the spicy Devil Burger; or crispy bacon, American cheese, onion rings and Snug Bar burger sauce on the Snug Burger. Visit on a Thursday for a Snug Burger and Long Island Iced Tea for £12.
