Sharon Struckman celebrates a family business on Hitchin Market supplying fine beverages from around the world
Wakelin’s of Hitchin has been supplying coffee to the town and beyond since 2011. James and Jen Wakelin pride themselves on the freshness of their blends and they currently stock 12 using a variety of premium single origin beans, including Indonesian, Kenyan, Ethiopian, Columbian, Brazilian and Costa Rican.
This family business is driven by their passion for great tastes and trying new things. Out of sheer curiosity they have ended up stocking a range of specialist international foods and drinks.
The diverse range of beverages sparked my inquisitiveness into trying at least five of them, ranging from Galvanina, a sophisticated organic Italian white tea, to Frugo, an ultra-fruity Polish drink. I then tried an exotic Thai fruit juice made of basil and pomegranate, which is produced using only the very best fruits available and is as delicious as it is refreshing. Another favourite of mine was the Bunaberg ginger beer from Australia, made with the finest ginger and sugarcane.
One of the teas that caught my eye and made me chuckle was Celestial Seasonings’ Tension Tamer, a traditional ginger tea with a tranquil twist. It contains eleuthero ginseng chamomile and B vitamins. It’s a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea and is said to help restore harmony to a hectic day.
