A new cinema, restaurants and other family entertainment activities are on the cards for Watford after shopping-centre operator intu received detailed planning consent for a £100 million redevelopment of its Charter Place complex, formerly known as the Harlequin

The company plans to integrate the present two adjoining centres to form a 1.4 million sq ft retail and leisure destination with larger modern units to attract strong brands and a public square that will host a diverse events programme including street theatre and music shows.

Watford mayor Dorothy Thornhill said, ‘We are fortunate while other shopping-centre schemes are floundering, ours is moving forward. Watford residents deserve the best, and they’re going to get it.’
