A moving account of the life of one of Britain’s best loved comics goes on show in Stevenage
Harpenden’s comic superstar Eric Morecambe met his sidekick Ernie Wise as a teenager in 1940, joining a revue called Youth Takes a Bow, where they performed gags and impressions. Their partnership was interrupted by National Service but resumed with great success after the war, when the pair went on to national stardom with their BBC primetime shows. Eric moved to Harpenden with his family in the 1960s, often referring to the town in his sketches.
Morecambe, written by Tim Whitnall is a moving, often hilarious play about this most fondly remembered entertainer. From early music hall to the 1970s Christmas Day specials, it is a tear-jerking, laughter-inducing and moving account of a man who helped bring sunshine to millions. See it on April 30 at Gordon Craig Theatre.
