Gardens galore will be open at the event

Bayford village between Hertford and Welwyn is preparing to welcome all-comers this weekend for its most important biennial event, Gardens Day

Organised by Charles Lambert, it began in 1988 to raise money for the church roof and over succeeding years has collected more than £200,000 for good causes including major charities the Red Cross and NSPCC as well as village amenities. The event is now thought to be the largest of its kind in the Britain.

This year’s gathering is on Sunday June 22 from 11.30am to 5pm and will feature five bands and at least a dozen open gardens offering barbecues, cream teas and bars. (
