Style advice

Are you longing for boutique hotel luxury at home? Kerry Laird at Fishpools furniture and homewares in Waltham Cross gives her five top tips to create the look

Use calm colours & quality materials

The polished look pictured is all about luxurious materials and subtle tones. Select elegant furniture in quality fabrics such as velvet or wool, positioned carefully for an ordered hotel feel. The Cadogan sofa collection seen here is the perfect place to start.

Lay a luscious rug

Soften your floor and create a defined area with a large rug in a subtle colour like this Blade design in heather tones.

Invest in an armchair

No good hotel lobby would be seen without an elegant upright armchair. We have this gorgeous button-backed Soho chair. If you can stretch to it, go for a pair.

right occasional pieces

A properly-placed coffee table of the right proportions will help to create structure in a room. Fishpools Rivoli
Occasional Collection has a range of pieces including this console table, which can double up as a smart desk with the addition of the dainty Royal occasional chair.

Finishing touches

Statement table lamps, well-stuffed cushions, carefully chosen accessory pieces and of course a coffee-table book will complete the look.

Paper pictures

When Erika Percival couldn’t find the right anniversary gift for her husband, she created her own and a business was born.

Her personalised paper art pictures are designed to complement individual home décor, with customers selecting the colour and design or adding in personal details. Each piece is handmade and can be made to fit in a frame provided or one of six standard frames. Popular are animals, hearts and adventure motifs.

‘I love to be creative and enjoy making bespoke artwork to meet each customer’s unique requirements,’ said the Wheathampstead craftswoman.

The artworks make a great gift for a christening, wedding, anniversary and Erika also makes personalised biodegradable wedding confetti.

Boutique in top 100

A St Albans boutique has been named as one of the top 100 small UK businesses. Chloe James Lifestyle sells homewares and unusual gifts as well as fashion and jewellery over two floors in a Tudor building on the High Street.

The shop was selected for the small biz 100 listing - a 100 day shop local campaign leading up to Small Business Saturday on December 3.

Donna Nichol launched the shop, which is named after her children, in 2010. She said, ‘I strongly believe that independent shops and restaurants create a point of difference for any town centre and we are working hard to keep our own high street alive. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing an existing customer bring in their friends and hearing them say that they love the shop.’
