THE yearning for a better work life balance away from the rat race of central London has gained even more ground since the recession hit.

THE yearning for a better work life balance away from the rat race of central London has gained even more ground since the recession hit.
Tom Houston, 29, and his partner Anne Banks, 30, are among the reported three-quarters of a million who have traded in city living for country life.
They bought a three-bedroom house at Explore Livings Balls Park development set in 60 acres of countryside east of Hertford town centre.
They enjoyed the buzz of being at the hub and still work in London but the good life which beckoned with the new house won them over.
Tom explained, We had both been renting in London but we felt we really wanted to get more for our money and buy our own home. Having grown up in Hertford I knew the area well and have family and friends here. We can still get to work very easily and the train only takes about 45 minutes.
The house they bought was from the Townsend Collection of detached and semi-detached properties. The exterior design mimics the developments famous mansion.
Each home has underfloor heating, iPod docking station and integrated sound system, pre-wiring for Sky+ and provision for HD ready wall-mounted flat screen TVs, built-in wardrobes in the master bedroom and CCTV. Kitchens have stone worktops, concealed pull-up sockets, ceramic floor tiling and integrated appliances.
Homes in The Townsend Collection start from 549,995. One and two-bedroom apartments are from 294,995.
