Enhancements to an ambitious development in the heart of St Albans are being drawn up to create more affordable homes, business space and parking. The site by Alban Arena (pictured), known as City Centre Opportunity Site South and including the former police station, is being redeveloped by St Albans City and District Council at a cost of around £60m.
Existing planning permission gained by private firm Angle Property is in place for the construction of two six-storey buildings for residential and commercial use.
A design review recommended a new public space on Victoria Street, ensuring buildings have good architectural character, and the need to address the impact on iconic views.
Julian Daly, council portfolio holder for development, said it is one of the most exciting and biggest developments the council has ever undertaken. ‘It has the potential to completely transform a rundown part of the city to the benefit of all residents as well as creating much-needed new business space and housing.’
