Butterflies thrived on Hertfordshire farmland last year after benefiting from the best summer weather in seven years

The county saw three times as many butterflies compared to the summer before. The newly-released Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey found farmland species had flourished over the summer after suffering one of the worst years on record in 2012. Species including brimstone, common blue, small copper, small and large skipper and small tortoiseshell (pictured) all bounced back.
