Rural news and inspiration in Herts

Horse crime patrol launched in North Herts

An initiative that uses horseback patrols to help tackle rural crime has been launched in North Herts

The Community Horse Patrol Scheme (CHiPS) is funded by the North Hertfordshire Community Safety Partnership and is the first of its kind in the region. It involves volunteers and their horses from the Kings Walden and Cockernhoe area.

Incidents targeted include fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles and other highways issues, arson and missing drain covers. The volunteers are also being asked to report concerns such as abandoned animals, security issues such as broken gates and fire hazards such as dry hay bales at harvest time.

Hatfield house secures Game Fair

Organisers of the Game Fair have confirmed that Hatfield House will be the southern venue for the event next year and in 2019 and 2021.

The show, the largest celebrating the British countryside, is at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire on July 29-31 and will alternate between the two venues over the next six years.

Game Fair officials say the announcement will help countryside-related businesses and those interested in countryside pursuits to plan their calendars.

The three-day show typically generates some £40m of business for the sector.
