Myddelton House was home to E A Bowles (1865 to 1954) who devoted much of his life to the creation of his beautiful Victorian Gardens. As an enthusiastic collector and accomplished plants-man Bowles discovered and selected many plants, in particular unusual varieties, many of which can still be seen in the Garden today.
After his death, the garden fell into disrepair and some of the plants were lost. However, since 1984 Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and the Bowles Society have been restoring the four-acre gardens in the original style of Bowles himself. The Gardens are also home to a prized collection of award-winning Bearded Iris.
Myddelton House Gardens was recently granted 500,000 Heritage Lottery Funding for renovation works. The grant will be used to restore the Victorian Kitchen Garden, the stonework in the Garden and the Stable Block. This two-year project will open the Victorian Kitchen Garden for the first time, show how horticulture was carried out in Victorian times and ensure the story of Bowles, including rarely seen artifacts and historic photographs, will also be made available to visitors at the gardens.
