Captivating, enchanting, daring. Just three words that describe last night's show Snow White on Ice at The Alban Arena in St Albans.
Captivating, enchanting, daring. Just three words that describe last nights show Snow White on Ice at The Alban Arena in St Albans. But I could use plenty more.
The Russian Ice Stars have transformed the stage of the Arena into an ice rink on which to display their extraordinary dancing and skating skills. From elaborate and fast spins to daring acrobatic displays above the stage, this was non-stop entertainment.
This was a magical tale being weaved cleverly on a small stage, sticking closely to the original story of an enchanted mirror, beautiful princess and a shiny red apple that is her undoing.
Above all it was traditional. From the fairytale costumes to the haunting music it was just as Snow White should have been, with not a touch of Disney in sight.
But that doesnt mean it was all serious. There was plenty of entertainment - and juggling provided by the seven dwarves as well as the two birds who became Snow Whites companions through the dark forest and beyond.
The best dancing of the night was provided by Snow White, with Prince Charming a close second for his ability to effortlessly lift her into the many gracious twists and turns of their duets. And applause was definitely earned by the gymnastics and aerial acrobatics of some of the dancers with their jaw-dropping stunts on and above the stage.
My two daughters and I loved being drawn into this magical world and in my eyes, this is a must-see show for any lovers of ice dance.
Snow White on Ice, by the Russian Ice Stars, is on at the Alban Arena until Sunday. For tickets call the box office on 01727 844488 or book online.
