The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Chris Oxley and his wife Marion received 240 guests at the annual Civic Ball in Sopwell House Hotel on March 19. The Mayors theme for 2009/2010 is Your Community Our Community and this was reflected in the guests, many of whom came from a wide range of charities and voluntary organisations operating across the district as well as key influential people. The Mayors principal charity is the St Albans Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), but the Council for Voluntary Services (CVS), also receives his support. In addition money has been raised for Grove House, Rotary Shelter Boxes and charities for the disabled. Cllr Oxley said, The evening was a huge success, with a wonderful speaker, Rt Rev John Gladwin, retired Bishop of Chelmsford, who is also national chairman of CAB. The event raised almost 8,000 for the Mayors charities.
