Avoiding obesity is a walk in the park

HERTS and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has been working with Welwyn Hatfield Primary Care Trust to run nature trails to encourage families to take in the great outdoors and burn off some unwanted calories.
HERTS and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has been working with Welwyn Hatfield Primary Care Trust to run nature trails to encourage families to take in the great outdoors and burn off some unwanted calories. The programme was launched at the Trust's Lemsford Springs Nature Reserve near Welwyn Garden City when a group of adults and children was welcomed to the reserve for a guided walk, a nature 'treasure hunt' and a spot of dipping in the lagoons to look for water creatures.
The project has been designed to get people interested in getting out and exploring the world around them as well as making the point that taking exercise doesn't have to mean expensive trips to the gym or swimming pool. As walking for 30 minutes at a steady pace can burn off 150 calories, it is hoped that this scheme will have people enjoying their exercise while learning about local nature and the environment at the same time.
Sandie Taylor, HMWT's Wildlife Watch co-ordinator says, 'Taking a walk through our parks and nature reserves not only exercises your muscles but lightens your mood and helps you to feel good about yourself. Even better, when you go out with friends and family and everyone is chatting together, listening to the birds and discovering things on the nature reserve, you're getting a good bit of exercise without even realising it!'
HMWT is planning other nature walks for the group around Welwyn and Hatfield including a bluebell walk in Sherrardspark Wood, looking for bats at Stanborough Lakes in the summer and a fungi foray in the autumn.
