EASTENDERS' John Altman joined the Mayor Designate of Stevenage, Cllr Michael Downing, to officially open the newly refurbished fitness@theleisurecentre in Stevenage

EASTENDERS John Altman, this years pantomime star at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage, joined the Mayor Designate of Stevenage, Cllr Michael Downing, to officially open the newly refurbished fitness@theleisurecentre at the Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre.

Prior to the opening, local residents were invited to sample the state-of-the-art fitness equipment, while working out to club classics played by Heart FM breakfast DJ Gaz, and many braved the winter conditions to enjoy the music, exercise and free giveaways.

Managed by Stevenage Leisure Ltd (SLL), in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council, the gym has benefitted from a 250,000 investment by the Council.

Fitness@theleisurecentre provides exercise for 170 GP referrals a week, with a wide range of activities in a safe and supervised environment, including gym sessions, Pilates, Zumba, and Tai Chi.

The gym has been refurbished with a modern open plan design with a new mezzanine floor, a new entrance and changing area, new flooring and lighting and a new cycle studio. The new entrance will allow easy access for wheelchair users.
