A support service for people who think they may have memory problems is now available in Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and the surrounding area.

Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) has co-operated with GPs and the Alzheimers Society to launch this brand new Early Memory Diagnosis and Support Service (EMDASS) which takes forward the NHS National Dementia Strategy.

The new service will provide an assessment for people who have concerns about possible memory problems, and support for those who need it.

Strategic Liaison Dementia Nurse for HPFT, Wendy Ward suggests, 'If you feel you have a problem with your memory on a daily basis, maybe other people have commented on this - or perhaps you know someone who is experiencing difficulties with their memory - this new service will help support people to find out why this could be happening and develop ways to cope with the memory problems.'

Access to the service is through the patients GP, who will carry out some initial tests, and then if appropriate make a referral to an EMDASS memory nurse. The nurse will ensure the service user gets a full diagnosis, as well as appropriate support, including their carer.
