Tories keep firm hold on Hertfordshire

THE Conservatives held onto all their Hertfordshire seats in last night's general election as a record number of people went to the polls.

Across the county turnout was at an average of nearly 70% - higher than the national average of 65% - as the Tories celebrated victory.
But while eight of the constituencies saw them take the seats comfortably, in St Albans, Watford and Stevenage it was a close contest.
In Watford Conservative Richard Harrington secured just 1,425 votes more than Liberal Democrat Sal Brinton; in St Albans Conservative Anne Mains majority was at 2,305 over Liberal Democrat Sandy Walkington; and in Stevenage Conservative Stephen McPartland was ahead of Labours Sharon Taylor by 3,578 votes.
Overall the Liberal Democrats showed some impressive gains to come in second in seven constituencies.
Turnout in St Albans was the highest at 75.4%; in Hitchin and Harpenden it was 74.1%; while in South West Hertfordshire the turnout was 72.5%.
