Finding a mother-of-the-bride (or groom) outfit can be an overwhelming purchase. But take on board these three tips and it will be a pleasure rather than a panic:

1 Don’t leave it to the last minute, or you will start to panic and impulse buy.

2 Take your time, don’t rush. Just enjoy every moment of the search.

3 Find something you love and feel fabulous in. Start with the dress and work from there.

For me, there can be no better choice than lace. Elegant, refined and chic, here are three ways to wear it by designer Gina Bacconi, all at John Lewis.

● Scallop flower lace dress in beige, £250.

This is a lovely example. The dress is very detailed, so all the accessories should be simple and sleek, allowing the dress to be the star of the ensemble. Opt for a hat that isn’t too fussy.

● Crepe dress with guipure over-top in violet, £300.

This is a great way of wearing a bold colour, without it looking too intense. The lace adds a softness that gives a delicate touch to the overall look. This should be paired with a longer coat to accentuate the cropped lace.

● Metallic guipure-top dress in navy/cream, £245.

While it’s most certainly wrong to wear white to a wedding unless you are the bride, I think this dress is the exception. The navy adds a little drama to the whole look. Team with navy accessories.
